Coincidiendo con el 250 aniversario de la concesión del título de ciudad a Santander, esta lección inaugural del curso académico 2005/06 de la Universidad de Cantabria propone que, aunque su historia como activo puerto de mar se remonta a la Edad Media, la ciudad actual es producto de la modernización de Europa, iniciada en el siglo XVIII y resultado de la iniciativa emprendedora por parte de sus habitantes.

Este libro centra su atenci n en los trabajadores en las calles, en particular los m s pobres, quienes buscaban su subsistencia en estos espacios abiertos. Su objetivo es analizar los cambios en las formas de trabajo y las pr cticas sociales de esta poblaci n durante las primeras d cadas del siglo XX, a os de modernizaci n de la ciudad y de inestabilidades pol ticas. Esta investigaci n ganadora del Premio Salvador Azuela 2006 del INERHM aborda la historia del trabajo en las calles, un tema de plena actualidad en una ciudad como la capital mexicana.
