Diario de un gato (Yawmiyyat hirr, Beirut, 1998) nos cuenta sin estridencias la “normalidad” de la vida diaria de Beirut en plena guerra civil. Esa cotidianeidad se verá rota por un hecho puntual que obligará al protagonista, el mimado gato Ziko, a tomar una decisión que de modo irreversible cambiará su destino. La guerra, el refugio en edificios derruidos, las explosiones, las trincheras y los juegos de los niños en la calle recorren una historia llena de humanidad que pretende hacernos reflexionar sobre los errores del pasado para que no volvamos a cometerlos. Aunque escrita en clave de fábula con sensibilidad y ternura, y desde una perspectiva poco común, es también una crítica audaz del trato que damos a los animales en determinadas circunstancias. Diario de un gato (Yaumiyyat hirr) fue incluido en 1998 en la IBBY Honour List for Children’s Novel (Zurich), y recibió ese mismo año el LIBBY Children’s Book Prize, que concede el International Board on Books for Young People, representado por más de 70 países.
