En julio de 1980 Daniel Barenboim y la Orquesta de Paris viajaron a Buenos Aires para dar una serie de conciertos en el Teatro Colón. A pesar del triunfo artístico excepcional de la gira, la solidaridad de un grupo de músicos de la orquesta con los artistas desaparecidos por la dictadura militar desembocó en un grave incidente diplomático entre Argentina y Francia. El episodio, dramatizado en los medios de prensa y detallado en las fuentes diplomáticas, mostró el poder transgresor de los músicos ante un poder autoritario y planteó preguntas fundamentales sobre la significación política de la música.
