Se trata de una síntesis de la historia de la India, desde el origen de la original civilización sánscrita en el segundo milenio a.C. hasta el comienzo de la era del colonialismo europeo, que en la India coincide con el sometimiento de la mayor parte del territorio al poder del Islam. Junto a las grandes líneas de la evolución social o política, se perfilan los rasgos principales de la cultura y religión, tanto hindú como musulmana.
