Este cuento de Gógol publicado en 1842 narra cómo un pobre e insignificante funcionario de la Administración rusa vive inmerso en su trabajo, hasta que un día descubre que su capote no aguanta más remiendos. Decide entonces comprarse uno nuevo para no perecer bajo la gélida temperatura de San Petersburgo. Por fin, ha encontrado un sentido a su vida de sacrificios: lograr el dinero suficiente para adquirir un nuevo capote. Sin embargo, la adquisición del capote tendrá para él consecuencias nefastas.
